Niagara Region tests water and supplies it to the area municipalities, who supply it to the residents & businesses in their community. We are responsible for the operation, installation and maintenance of water and sewer systems.
26 public beaches are testing weekly by our health department. The beaches are located on Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the Niagara River.
The Region is recommending changes to the way it charges municipalities for its water supply.
The current payment structure is based on the amount of water used, which has decreased over the past 5 years. As 90% of the Region's costs are fixed, the decrease has led to an $18.3 million shortfall.
The proposed structure will require area municipalities to pay 25% of the fixed costs based on their usage in the previous year, and the remaining 75% will be based on a volume. This would ensure Niagara Region does not have future budget shortfalls.
During periods of heavy rain or snowmelt, older sewer pipes can be too small to handle the water. When this happens, water can back up into your basement. To reduce this, the Region has added Combined Sewer Overflows throughout the region to allow the excess water to flow into ditches and other waterways.
