Acceptable Leaf and Yard Material
The following may be placed in an acceptable bag or container and set out for curbside collection.
- Leaves
- Plants
- Weeds (including noxious weeds)
- Small twigs
- Hedge clippings
Twigs and clippings must be no more than 1.5 cm (0.5 in.) in diameter and 30.5 cm (12 in.) in length.
Unacceptable Leaf and Yard Material
- Branches (collected separately on designated days)
- Sod
- Soil
- Rocks
- Treated wood products (lumber)
- Grass clippings
Grass clippings may be dropped of free of charge at Niagara Region Landfills and Waste and Recycling Drop-Off Depots.
Items for your Backyard Composter
Listed below are examples of the most common acceptable compostable materials and the items you should avoid putting in your backyard composter.
Greens (Nitrogen Rich Materials)
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Coffee grounds
- Grass clippings
- Plant trimmings
- House plants
- Cut flowers
- Tea bags
- Egg shells
Browns (Carbon Rich Materials)
- Dry leaves
- Wood chips
- Sawdust
- Straw
- Twigs
Items NOT Accepted
- Fatty foods, butter, oil and salad dressing
- Diseased or insect - infected plants
- Stubborn weeds such as crab grass
- Dog and cat feces
- Weeds with mature seeds
- Meat, bones and fish scraps
