Leaf and Yard Waste

The Region has an effective program in place to help manage the composting of leaf and yard waste. Understanding the below information will help ensure the program stays efficient.

Plastic Bags Will not be Accepted

Plastic bags, including those that are transparent green, orange and clear, are not accepted in the Leaf and Yard Waste collection program.

Residents are encouraged to use their Green Bin, compostable plastic bags, Kraft paper bags or rigid, reusable containers like a garbage can. If using a reusable container, ensure they are clearly marked with the word "organics".

Bags and Container Limits

Bags and containers must measure no more than 91 cm (3 ft.) high by 61 cm (2 ft.) in diameter and must not exceed 22.7 kg (50 lbs.) when full .

Remember: some materials can be placed in a backyard composter.

Look for these symbols when buying compostable bags:

Compostable Logo    Compostable Logo

Plastic bags that are labeled 'degradable', 'biodegradable' or 'oxo-degradable', but do not carry the above logo will not be accepted.

Using Kraft Paper Bags

While the use of paper bags for leaf and yard waste is not mandatory, there are several advantages to using them:

  • Bags are durable and will stay open when filling with waste materials
  • Their large capacity will hold about 107L of material
  • Kraft paper bags are all-natural and weatherproof
  • The bags are stronger than plastic bags and won't puncture easily

Kraft paper bags are available in retail stores throughout the Niagara Region. View a list of stores that sell Kraft Paper Bags.
