Seek Shade When Outdoors

Shade can come in many forms - natural; (e.g. trees) and - built; (e.g. umbrellas, canopies, gazebos).

Staying in the shade is an easy way to protect yourself from the sun!

Shade (both natural and built) will help to:

  • Clean the air
  • Conserve energy
  • Reduce summer heat
  • Provide protection from the sun
  • Help prevent skin cancer

Consider adding shade to the following areas:

  • Your backyard
  • Schools grounds
  • Child care centres
  • Parks and playgrounds
  • Sport and recreational centres
  • Outdoor pools, beaches and splash pads
  • Or anywhere that you and your family spend time outdoors!
Information adapted from Sun Safe York.

Do you need a shade policy?

A shade policy (or guidelines) will help to ensure that shade is provided in outdoor public places. School boards, child care centres, parks and recreation, workplaces and other organizations can develop policy to add shade (built or natural) to their outdoor spaces.
