Strategies for Parents to Help Children Cope with Stress

How can YOU help your child cope when he/she feels stressed?

STOP! Find a time to connect with your child. The best time may be when you are both doing the same activity (colouring, dishes, etc.)

LOOK! Check your child’s facial expressions and body signals throughout the day. Will she look into your eyes? Does he look anxious? Is she biting her nails?

LISTEN! Spend time with your child on a daily basis, especially if you think he/she is stressed. Sit facing your child and listen without speaking. Give positive encouragement by nodding your head. Let your child finish his/her own sentences. Do not criticize what your child says or they will learn not to tell you things that bother them.
