Sources Of Stress
Normal and Long-Term Stressors:
Stressors are the agents that cause a person to be stressed. Normal stressors are a part of everyday life and are ones over which a child has some control. Some examples include:
- Having too much to do
- Not being able to express a need or want
- Fighting with siblings
- Fear of dogs or the dark
- Being teased or not having someone to sit with at lunch
- Being late for school
- Having to perform in front of others
- Not getting along with friends or classmates
- Being sick
- Disorganized routine
Long-term stressors continue over a long period of time and a child has little or no control over them. They include:
- Moving to a new school
- Parental divorce
- Parental fighting
- Death of a family member/friend
- Being left on one's own for too long
- Moving to a new home
- Fear of failure in school, sports or group activities
- The birth of a new baby brother or sister
