Sources Of Stress

Normal and Long-Term Stressors:

Stressors are the agents that cause a person to be stressed. Normal stressors are a part of everyday life and are ones over which a child has some control. Some examples include:

  • Having too much to do
  • Not being able to express a need or want
  • Fighting with siblings
  • Fear of dogs or the dark
  • Being teased or not having someone to sit with at lunch
  • Being late for school
  • Having to perform in front of others
  • Not getting along with friends or classmates
  • Being sick
  • Disorganized routine

Long-term stressors continue over a long period of time and a child has little or no control over them. They include:

  • Moving to a new school
  • Parental divorce
  • Parental fighting
  • Death of a family member/friend
  • Being left on one's own for too long
  • Moving to a new home
  • Fear of failure in school, sports or group activities
  • The birth of a new baby brother or sister
