Wind Turbines and the Potential Health Impact

Wind Turbine

On May 20, 2010, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health released a report about wind turbines in response to public concern about the potential health impact.

Concerned residents are encouraged to read the full report.

Wind Turbine Report Summary

The report makes the following conclusions:

  • While some people living near wind turbines report symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, and sleep disturbance, the scientific evidence does not show a direct link between wind turbine noise and adverse health effects.

  • The sound level from wind turbines at common residential setbacks is not sufficient to cause hearing impairment or other direct health effects, although some people may find it annoying.

Approvals of Wind Farms

Wind farm developments are subject to a Renewable Energy Approval from to the Ministry of Environment. Applicants must meet a number of requirements including:

  • Public notice and consultation
  • Municipal consultation
  • Compliance with minimum setbacks

More information on the application/approval process is available on the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure's website.

Given the priority the province of Ontario is placing on the expansion of clean and renewable sources of energy, the future will likely bring more wind farms.
