FASD and the School-Aged Child

  • Children exposed to alcohol in the womb, may experience physical, mental, behavioural and learning disabilities which create lifelong implications.

  • The majority of children do not exhibit physical characteristics and as a result, their disorder often goes undetected.

  • Usually, it is the behavioural issues that are identified and which need to be understood as symptoms of FASD.

  • It is important for the parent to approach the school and advocate for the need to tailor a learning program around the child's ability.

  • Success of the FASD student depends on the parent and educator working together to design a program to meet the child's specific needs

  • For FASD students to achieve success, all educators must change their expectations for their students. FASD makes education challenging, but not impossible.
