Middle Years 6 to 12

Communication

Communication is one of your child’s most important social skills.   It is not only talking with others, but it includes tone of voice, body language, facial expression and eye contact.  Parents need to continue to model appropriate speech and language skills.  Allow your child to talk and take part in family conversations.  They need to be exposed to all forms of written and oral communication.

In this section, you will find more information on communicating with your child...

Guidance

At these ages your child has learned many skills and is becoming independent.  Even though they are growing up, they still need you.  They need to learn about safety and danger.  They may complain “That’s not fair!”.  Ask what they think is fair in the situation.  Make sure your expectations and the reasons for them are clear.  Know where your child goes online.  They need guidelines on whom they can instant message.  You need to instruct them to check with you before giving out any personal information online.

In this section, you’ll find strategies for setting boundaries for your child...

Relationships

When your child is at school, they develop new relationships, with peers and school staff.  If you model and teach your child how to take turns, how to use small talk to start a conversation and to listen actively to others, they will learn how to have relationships with others.  Encourage them to show kindness and respect to others by doing these things yourself.

In this section, you will find more information on your child’s relationships...
