Immunization for Adults
Prevention of infection by immunization is a lifelong process that
needs to be tailored to meet your needs resulting from occupation,
foreign travel, illness, lifestyle and age.
Immunization begins
in infancy and continues throughout life. ALWAYS KEEP A RECORD,
as you may need to show your record for school, employment or travel.
The following vaccines are recommended by the Canadian Immunization Guide.
- ADACEL - is indicated for the prevention of tetanus,diphtheria & whooping cough in adolescents and adults, aged 4 - 64 years, but only publicly funded for ages 14 - 16 year olds.
- TD - is the vaccine for the prevention of tetanus and diphtheria. Adults should receive a booster shot every 10 years.
- FLU VACCINE - is recommended annually for everyone six months of age and older.
- PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE - A single dose is recommended for persons 65 years of age and older. Consult with your physician if you have any chronic illnesses or other questions regarding this vaccine. In some cases a booster dose may be required.
- HEPATITS B VACCINE - Adults who are at risk of exposure to Hepatitis B in their occupation, lifestyle or environment should have the Hepatitis B vaccine.
- MEASLES, MUMPS, RUBELLA VACCINE - Adults who are college/university students, travellers or are born after 1970 should be vaccinated, if no evidence of a history of immunization or documented proof of disease is available.
