Diversify For Added Appeal And Variety

Diversifying your lawn space can add an extra dimension of appeal while reducing the amount of grass you have to maintain. A diverse landscape attracts more birds, butterflies and other wildlife and it can be easier to maintain when the right plants are chosen to suit the conditions.

Also in areas where it is difficult to grow a traditional lawn, plants more suited to the area can thrive. For example, periwinkle and lily of the valley are good ground covers for shaded sites, while creeping juniper and wild thyme are better for sunny dry sites. Planting a variety of native plants, drought resistant trees and shrubs as well as low ground cover promotes biodiversity and that translates into a healthier stronger yard.

Experiment with alternative landscapes such as mulched perennial beds, rock or alpine gardens. Once established, these are drought-resistant and require less maintenance.

Convert to different species
Replace grass in portions of your lawn with nitrogen fixing species such as clover. As well a mixture of different grass types will make your lawn healthier and more able to resist drought and pests than a lawn made up of a single type of grass.

Replace grass in high traffic areas
Grass in high traffic areas will tend to wear down and thin out, giving weeds the opportunity to take root. Consider removing the grass and using pavers, gravel or mulch to create a walk. You will eliminate any bare spots and keep weeds from moving in.

Add a vegetable garden
While they do require maintenance of their own, replacing part of your lawn with a vegetable, fruit or herb garden will reduce lawn area and maintenance while helping out in the kitchen.

Ask an expert
Consult with the professionals at your local garden outlets, nurseries and landscape centres for ideas on how to diversify and beautify your yard as well as the best plants to use that will flourish in your property's soil and light conditions.
