Benefits Of A Successful Composting Program

Composting benefits soil and plants in many ways:

  • Increases soil's organic matter content and its moisture-holding capacity.
  • Improves soil porosity and helps to control soil erosion.
  • Enhances plant and flower growth, and helps plants develop strong root structures.

In addition to diverting a large proportion of the waste stream away from disposal, an effective composting program can produce a high quality soil amendment with a variety of end uses. Composting diverts large proportion of household organic wastes from landfill sites - conserving landfill space and reducing the production of leachate and methane gas - both of which add to the cost of operating a landfill.
