Regional Council is the policy-forming and decision-making body of Regional Government that guides the administration of the affairs of the municipality.
Niagara Region is governed by a Regional Chair and 30 Regional Councillors. Councillors are representatives of the 12 area municipalities. The Mayor of each municipality serves on Regional Council by virtue of his/her Office. The remaining eighteen members are directly elected. All Regional Councillors serve for a four-year term.
Regional Councillors elect the chair for a four-year term. The Chair is the head of Council and serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the municipality. The Chair presides over all Council meetings, serves on all Regional Committees, represents the Region at public functions and maintains an ongoing relationship with other levels of government.
