Regional Councillor Debbie Zimmerman served as Regional Chair from 1997 to 2003.
Councillor Zimmerman began her political career in 1978 when she was elected as Alderman for the Town of Grimsby. In 1989 she was selected to fill a vacated Regional Council seat for the Town of Grimsby. She has been elected to the same seat since that time. In 1997 she was first elected Regional Chair of the Region of Niagara, a position that she served for two terms. The Province of Ontario appointed Councillor Zimmerman to the Niagara Escarpment Commission from 1994 to 1997.
Councillor Zimmerman currently serves on the Corporate Services Committee, the Integrated Community Planning Committee (formerly the Integrated Community Planning and Public Works Committee) and the Audit Committee. She also serves on the Transportation Strategy Steering Committee, Planning Review Committee, and the Agricultural Task Force Committee. She has a strong interest in economic development and trade; she was a member of the Team Canada 2001 Trade Mission to China. She has had a strong voice in establishing the Niagara Bi-National Region Economic Roundtable and is committed to a process that will see the completion of a Mid-Peninsula Corridor.
As the recipient of the 1998 Niagara College, "Niagara Award", Councillor Zimmerman was recognized for bringing positive recognition to the Niagara area and commitment to service and vision. Niagara College presented Councillor Zimmerman with the 2001 Board of Governors Award. She was also the 1998 Premier's Award Nominee for Alumni of Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology. Councillor Zimmerman was conferred the Y.W.C.A. 2001 Woman of Distinction Award. She is also the recipient of the 2002 Zonta Club of St. Catharines International Women's Day and Yellow Rose Day Award for her professional and volunteer work that has made a difference in the lives of women and children in the Niagara Region.
Councillor Zimmerman is a graduate of the Department of Journalism at Niagara College. She resides in Grimsby with her family and is an active participant in community events in both Grimsby and the Niagara Region.
