Senior Services Volunteer Recognition
Mr. Domenic Ventresca, Director Seniors Services advised Council members that this was Volunteer Appreciation Week across Canada and that Niagara Region's Seniors Services was proud to recognize its 914 volunteers that serve in the Region's 8 long-term homes and in the numerous seniors community programs. Mr. Ventresca added that the Seniors Services volunteers are truly amazing as evidenced by their long list of achievements in 2007 (99,252 hours of service and $229,636 raised).

Regional Chair Peter Partington and Committee Co-Chair Brian Baty helped present certificates of recognition for 8 outstanding volunteers for their extraordinary collective contributions of 335 years of service to the Region's long-term care homes.

Council members communicated their appreciation to these exemplary citizens of Niagara by way of a standing ovation.

Off-load Delay Update
Council approved a report updating Committee and Council on the offload delay issue was received and Option One approved with a letter to be written to the Province to request reimbursement of this funding. PHD 14-2008/CSD 55-2008 April 15, 2008

Regional Council Releases Reports
Regional Council released to the public Reports CSD 62-2008, respecting Matters Concerning the Security of the Municipality's Property, Proposed or Pending Acquisitions of Land and Solicitor-Client Advice and CSD 63-2008, respecting A Matter of Security of the Property of the Municipality.

Update of Bi-National Planning and Water Stewardship Opportunities
Council approved a Report recommending the endorsement, in principle, of several recommendations for reclaiming the Great Lakes Economic Leadership that is set out in a report by the Brookings Institute. Also, recommended was declaring 2009 as the "Year of Water Stewardship", holding a related Binational Conference and to begin working with other municipal and agency partners in the bi-national area to collectively nominate the IJC for the 2009 Stockholm Water Prize. LEED Canada Pilot Project for Administration Buildings
Council approved a Report recommending that the Niagara Region participate in the LEED Canada Pilot Program for Administration Buildings. It is the first step towards upgrading all Regional Headquarter buildings to LEED recognized energy efficient, environmentally friendly facilities that minimize long term costs and save taxpayers money.
